Shaun Gale praises the spirit and character of his side after Boro’ incredible 4-3 win over Poole Town at Privett Park.

It was a game with plenty of drama with Boro taking a 2-0 lead within 20 minutes, however Poole came back and took the lead in the 84th minute thanks to Tony Lee.

Poole looked to have sealed the game, but Dan Wooden scored the equaliser in the 92nd minute before Brad Tarbuck scored the winner in the 97th minute.

Gale said he doesn’t think he could take that every week.

“It was a great game to watch in the first half but in the second half we just didn’t get to the races. We defended poorly, we were nervous and we gave them a goal.

“That’s football though, in the second half we never got to grips with the game and that sometimes happens when you play youngsters. What we did show was that there is a great spirit and character within the group and they showed that in abundance to not give up and keep going.

“Me and Graham Rix spoke to them afterwards because, although I love the enthusiasm and we won the game, the most important thing is we learn and we don’t do that again, I don’t think I could take that every week.”

It wasn’t all good news on the day for Boro though, with Harry Kavanagh sustaining a nasty injury when he fell on his shoulder.

“Harry’s [Kavanagh] injury is a nasty one, he broke his collarbone or dislocated his shoulder we are not 100% sure yet,” said Gale.

“He will be a massive loss, he is a great kid with a fantastic attitude and was brilliant in pre-season in which he played every minute. We will have to wait and see what comes next but it’s a horrible part of football and unfortunately it has happened to Harry.’

It was also a welcomed return to Theo Lewis, who scored the second goal on his return before being taken off.

Gale said that it was a precaution due to Lewis' lack of pre-season.

“I took Theo [Lewis] off because he has COVID early on in pre-season at Hungerford and missed a couple of sessions, so he is not up to match fitness but you can see what he brings to the team.

“I thought he made a foul which was a tired tackle so then I thought it was time to take him off. When we took him off I thought it didn’t work, Nicky [Dembele] struggled at first but then sprung into life and was involved in the two goals, which ultimately people will remember when they leave. "
