Pat Suraci said the ‘Centre of Excellence’ gives young players an “alternative” to get into football.
Suraci, alongside Joe Lea, will head the ‘Centre of Excellence’ scheme which will start from next season. The winger played at Gosport Borough for three seasons before moving to Weymouth and then Blackfield & Langley during the 2019/2020 season.
The scheme will also offer an ‘academic football’ option through St Vincent college, where young players aged 16-18 can play and study to earn a BTEC Diploma.
“The diploma is an alternative to those who can’t do scholarships, you are doing full-time training. So it’s a pathway to full-time football, when you come out of school.
“Having the diploma also, at least, gives them something to fall back to if they can’t make it as a footballer, which is really important. I would have liked to have something like this when I left school, there wasn’t anything like this available to me”
Suraci will not only be heading the scheme, but will also be manager of the under 23s side.
“It’s something me and [Joe] Lea are really excited to do, and are grateful to the chairman for the opportunity. It’s a massive opportunity to have hours and hours of practise developing both older and younger players, whilst still playing.”
The scheme will be open to all youth players in the local area, and not just Gosport Borough academy players.
“We want players that want to come to us, instead of travelling all the way to Portsmouth or Fareham to find football. We want them to help them make it into the first team, and even, hopefully, go on into the professional game.”
