Gosport withhold late Hungerford pressure to take the much needed three points.
Unbeaten in eight, Gosport’s form has been nothing short of exceptional however our last two league outings both ended in goalless draws. As for the Crusaders they have come off an impressive 4-0 win over Marlow but would be without Elis Watts following a hamstring injury.
Five minutes into the game midfielder Cameron Murray just outside of the box turned away from Jarra and took aim at goal. Rifling just wide of the right post.
Following this chance Smith and Yearwood linked up well down the left channel allowing for the latter to shoot at goal. With a knuckleball the effort headed towards the far corner forcing a good save from Clarke.
In this frantic first twenty minutes it was all BORO’. The closest opportunity in this spell saw Wooden cushion the ball deep inside the Hungerford half before switching onto Yearwood. With a powerful shot, the attacker’s effort was once again just wide.
The game did go quiet until the stroke of half time when Harry Kavanagh was pushed in the back just outside the visitors’ box, winning Gosport a free-kick. Asher Yearwood stood up and curled his set-piece over a four man Hungerford wall, flying into the top corner. Easily a contender for goal of the season.
Half-Time: Gosport 1-0 Hungerford
After the restart it seemed that both sides were not willing to commit when going forward in the risk of conceding, resulting with little action in the second interval. Jarra on the sixty-second minute had an ambitious shot from just over the half-way line. With the windy conditions, the shot was parried just wide of Parkes’ left post.
With trepidation around the stadium with fans holding their breath as Hungerford had one last attack, substitute George Smith came close with three minutes left on the clock. Doing well to get across his shot, the Hungerford man slotted just wide in a golden opportunity to steal a late point.
Even in the four minutes added time, Gosport’s back line stayed solid with it finishing:
Full-Time: Gosport 1-0 Hungerford
One moment of magic was enough for BORO’ to take home the three points in a great Christmas present. Up next we travel to Havant & Waterloovile on Boxing Day, a classic club derby, so we’ll see you there. We hope you have a good Christmas, and final words: UP THE BORO!!!
