National League side Wealdstone prove to be too powerful, knocking BORO’ out of the FA Cup.
Being one of the biggest games in the club’s history, it is just the fourth time the Gosport has made it to the fourth round qualifying. Following triumph over Oxford City we were drawn to National League side Wealdstone, located two leagues above us.
Many fans who made the three hour trip must have thought we would be in for a long afternoon after Gosney tripped new signing, Alex Reid in the penalty box on the second minute. The former Oldham man stepped up but diving to his right, Gosney guessed the right way, redeeming himself with a fantastic save!
Ten minutes later BORO’ had a crack at goal with Stanley in space lining up a right footed strike, testing Sam Howes and forcing the keeper into making a good save.
But the former EFL keeper couldn’t do anything on the 21st minute when he came up against prolific striker Dan Wooden. Having scored a brace in his last FA Cup outing, he must have fancied another today. On his weaker foot, a right footed strike beat Howes in a great finish, giving the Southern League side the lead.
Gosport came close again with quarter of an hour left. Kavanagh driving down the channel found Yearwood who went for goal. A big deflection sent it just wide of the right post with nothing coming from the corner.
Unfortunately the Southern League side couldn’t hold on until the break. Reid on his debut pounced on a Gonsey save to grab the hosts’ their equaliser just before the break.
Half-Time: Wealdstone 1-1 Gosport Borough
Five minutes after the re-start Wealdstone came close from a corner. A ball dropping to Sandat at the back post, saw the attacker overhead kicking it onto the post in a real let off for the visitors.
Gergiou and Sandat once again linked up nicely down the left, connecting a ball onto Kretzschmar striking past Gosney to give the National League side the lead for the first time in this match.
Things became much harder when Joe Morrison was shown Red after bringing down Reid. Free-kick was also given 20 yards out but the set-piece is fired into the BORO’ wall.
Wealdstone made the most of the extra man advantage, and with five minutes left on the clock they made it three. Reid took the ball around Gosney allowing him to pass it into the back of the net to finish off this contest.
Ruthlessly Wealdstone won another late penalty after a foul from substitute Agbeseyi. They say second time is the charm and this time Reid converted to get his hat-trick.
Full-Time: Wealdstone 4-1 Gosport Borough
This result means an end to this seasons great FA Cup campaign. We return back to league action Tuesday when we travel to Walton & Hersham, so we’ll see you then. But final words from me: UP THE BORO!!!
